From
2100 - 750 BC (10th - 25th Dynasties), Egypt's power and glory were epitomized
by the great temples of Luxor and Karnak (in what was then the city of
Thebes). It was here that the New Kingdom (1570 - 1100 BC) revelled in
its finest hour, with the city of the living thriving between the two temples,
while the city of the dead, the Theban Necropolis, lay opposite on the
Nile's west bank. With the Assyrian invasion in the seventh century BC,
however, 14 centuries of grandeur ended abruptly, and for the Romans and
Greeks, Thebes became simply a crumbling but magnificent tourist attraction. |
Later, first the French
and then a host of other European and American Egyptologists swept away
centuries of dust from temples and tombs. With the opening of the Suez
canal, European interest in Egypt increased, and visitors quickly discovered
the country's delightful winter climate. The monuments and temperatures
of Luxor (current population 80 000 people) have been enjoyed ever since. |
